A professional teeth cleaning is a painless and simple dental treatment. Knowing precisely what will happen during the treatment will help qualm any stress of fear you may have. If you still have concerns, however, don’t hesitate to speak to your dentist in Elkhorn, WI, Dr. Ronald Hull of Gentle Dental Care, before the procedure. Generally speaking, here’s what you can expect during the teeth cleaning process.

The Oral Exam

A tiny mirror will be used for inspecting your oral tissues, including your gums, teeth, tongue, and mouth surfaces to see whether there are existing dental concerns like gum disease or decay, among others. You may also need to undergo an x-ray, depending on the results of the oral exam.

Removal of Tartar or Plaque Buildup

A scaler will be utilized for removing tartar and plaque buildup along the gum line and between your teeth. Expect to hear some scraping, which is totally normal and to be expected. The more buildup you have, the more scraping will be needed to completely eradicate it.

A Thorough Brushing

Once any buildup has been removed, your teeth will be cleaned with an electric toothbrush. Expect to hear some grinding sounds due to the amount of power produced by the toothbrush’s motor to give you that deep cleaning action. This brushing step will further get rid of any buildup in your mouth.

The last step is rinsing your mouth with a rinse that may or may not contain fluoride.

The American Dental Association recommends everyone to undergo professional teeth cleanings at least twice annually. But some individuals might need to undergo more frequent cleanings as advised by their dentist. Likewise, kids may also require dental sealant applications or touchups to help prevent cavity formation. Keep in mind, though, that whether or not you require more frequent cleanings, you should continue seeing your dentist for regular cleanings to help keep your oral health top shape.
